_404 ARCHIVE_ is an experimental online archive of the mid-’90s to early-’00s transgender/transsexual internet.

In the first decade of the World Wide Web, individually-coded websites functioned as core hubs of information & personal expression before social media platforms. For trans users, these personal pages often featured photographs, writing, online diaries, practical advice, curated lists of resources, & more.

But almost none of these websites exist online today.

This project recovers & documents the digital ephemera of early-internet personal homepages made by transgender, transsexual, and gender-diverse communities, sourced via a network of hyperlinks preserved by the Wayback Machine.
